Miller Orthodontics was recommended to us by our regular dentist, because my 13-year-old trans son needed braces to help realign his lower teeth. I always have a bit of anxiety when we go to a new office of any kind, because we have had poor interactions some places not respecting my sons preferred name or pronouns and we have had to gently remind them over and over again to please just put it in his chart, so that there was no confusion with anyone moving forward. But each time, this request fell on deaf ears. You don't have to agree with someone to have respect or common decency. I don't want my child to grow up in a world thinking it's okay for people to just disrespect him everywhere he goes. So, I made the decision last year to quit going to those places. It was difficult, but well worth it. I am pleased to say that I only let the office know one time his name and pronouns. They have respected it since. No matter who my son is working with, they always come out calling him by his correct name even if they have never met him before. Thank you so much to Miller ortho for being a safe space for my son and the community.
I will never forget the first day my son had his first brackets put in. Remember my child is 13, so it can already be a tough age sometimes, without even getting into the topic of teeth... I don't think I even really noticed that he was smiling a little less over the last few years. I did not realize how self-conscious he was becoming about his teeth. But the day he walked out of the office with his brand-new brackets securely in place. I noted that his laugh and smile were so much bigger than before we went in. Where had that big, ear to ear smile gone? I remember thinking, well if he likes them this much with the braces on, then I wonder what his reaction will be the day he gets them off! I am so grateful to the doctors and staff here for restoring his confidence with his teeth, it may seem like a small thing to most people but for people like my son it means the world. I will always recommend Miller ortho as long as I'm able.
